Who am I?
My name is Diep Duong. I am a Data Research Analyst. I bring out insights from data's orders and patterns to inform decision-making. I am looking for a place where I can continue my growth and development as a Data Research Analyst, produce insightful research, and improve my analytics skills.
My passion for analytics grew organically. I was trained in research methodology and applied statistics during my doctoral study at Southern Illinois University. SIU equipped me with substantial knowledge of statistics. My work at SIU involved data collection and applying linear and nonlinear models to test statistical assumptions. I've worked with survey data from United Nations Development Programs, World Banks, General Social Survey and other derived/combined data from government entities such as Census Bureau, Bureau of Economic Analysis, Local Comptroller offices.

Upon graduation, I joined Decision Support Services (DSS) team at University of Minnesota Twin Cities in 2017. My work as a Data Analyst involved producing reports and analyses to support the data-driven decision-making efforts of College of Liberal Arts. I performed data queries, data analysis, and report writing using SQL, Excel, and Tableau. My analytical reports focused on the area of student recruitment, admission, program performance, process assessment, human resources, and retention. The 10-month tenure with DSS has broadened my understanding not only in analytics, but also in database and project management. I was introduced to Peoplesoft, GitHub, Gitlab, and project management tools such as Asana and Slack. Most importantly, my experience with DSS taught me that setting expectations, prioritizing tasks, and team-work are pillars of success.
I was fortunate to learn a great deal from the guidance and advice of my former advisors, managers, and team members in the development as a young professional. I am committed to facilitate a similar supporting work environment where discussion, collaboration, and mentorship are emphasized.

What are my tools of trade?
My expertise is data analytics, which is a process of inspecting, cleansing, transforming, and modeling data to discover useful information to inform decision-making.
My tools are SQL, Excel, Tableau, Stata, and VISME.
SQL
SQL is the data management tool I use to communicate with and manipulate relational databases from multiple source systems and transform for analytics.

Some of the SQL techniques I've performed including SELECT, COUNT, SUM, DISTINCT, GROUP BY, HAVING, IF, WHERE, COALESCE, UNION, JOIN, IN, EXISTS, CASE, DROP, CREATE.

Excel
I use Pivot table and other formulas and functions like VLOOKUP, HLOOKUP to analyze data. I've produced 80+ regular and ad hoc reports on student and academic program performance for internal and external stakeholders of the College of Liberal Arts.
Excel offers a level of simplicity in reporting that is well-received by non-technical users.

Tableau
Tableau is my favorite tool to visually present data and build dashboard.
I can:
Prep data for analysis and combine data using data blending
Build advanced chart types and use statistical techniques to analyze data
Build interactive dashboard
Implement advanced geographic mapping techniques and custom images and geocoding to build spatial visualization of non-geographic data.

Stata
Stata and SPSS are statistical software packages that allow me to bring data to another level of understanding.
I've used Stata to run descriptive stats, regression, cluster analysis, graphs, charts, and maps in previous research projects.

Project management tools: Asana, Slack
Asana and Slack provide the environment for my team and I to coordinate, collaborate, and manage progress of our projects. Slack is a great tool for code sharing.

VISME
VISME is a professional presentations & infographics tool that allows researcher to present findings with simple and interactive designs.

What have IÂ done professionally?
Data Analyst
University of Minnesota

- Produced 80+ regular and ad-hoc reports regarding student recruitment, financial aid, process assessment, enrollment management, student services, financial systems, human resources, graduation as well as other electronic content for college's administrative and academic departments.
- Monitored and responded to data requests from internal and external stakeholders of the University
- Collaborated with developers and database manager to maintain and develop efficiency in data flow for our local data storage
- Administered user access to College of Liberal Arts local reporting hubs
Research Assistant
Southern Illinois University

I've involved in three major research projects while working as a Research Assistant at SIU.

In the first project, I managed the process of data collection, literature review, and data cleaning and transformation. This data was used in the predictive models to estimate the influence of financial, economic, and demographic factors on savings across localities. The important implication of this analysis was to inform policy makers of the decision on future savings.

The second project was my co-authored publication on civic engagement and economic development. We deployed economic and social data to estimate the impact of public participation to local economy using descriptive statistics and spatial regression models. Our work is published in the International Journal of Public Administration.

The third project was my dissertation, in which I investigated citizens' perception on the quality of local public education, health care, and safety. I used Stata and Excel to perform a two-stage analysis including cluster analysis and OLS regression analysis to test my hypotheses. I found that citizens' satisfaction with local services differs greatly between resource-rich and resource-poor localities.
Instructor
Southern Illinois University

My university teaching experience allowed me to excel in both leadership and communication skills. As an instructor, I learned to manage time, set clear expectations, and take initiatives to further the exchange of ideas to compel students to think critically about problems at hand, and work collaboratively to solve them.
